Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Acceptance month – a month when wider society is encouraged to, not only become aware of autism, but learn more about What Autism Is, so they can meaningfully include autistic people in all that society has to offer.

In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared April 2nd  ‘World Autism Awareness Day’ in an effort to highlight what is needed to help autistic people to lead their fullest lives.

We have many plans for Autism Acceptance Month  including activities and events that will educate the community and raise funds for our work.

These include:

  • Hosting a Fundraising Event during Autism Acceptance month – more details to follow
  • Supporting individuals and groups to Host a Coffee Morning in aid of Howth Sutton Autism Friendly Community –  we will provide information leaflets and posters and a speaker from our committee to support the host in educating and thanking their supporters.
  • Having information stands in local supermarkets, where people in the community can come and talk to us about Autism and learn more about it.
  • Engaging with local schools – we are encouraging local schools to celebrate Autism Awareness Day by hosting bake sales and no-uniform days. We will come and talk to school children and teachers about how life is for an autistic child growing up in Howth and Sutton and how their peers can help to make them feel more accepted and included.
  • Engaging with local clubs – we are encouraging local clubs to run events for Autism Acceptance Month. These might include matches, races and tournaments. We will provide a committee member to come and  support the club.

If you think you can help with any of these activities and events, please get in touch on howthsuttonautismcommunity@gmail.com
